Agnes Aljas, Research Secretary of the Estonian National Museum (ERM), presented ERM’s digital projects and community-engaging activities in her plenary lecture at the international conference “Acts. Facts. Artefacts”, held on 27–29 November in Riga by the Latvian National Museum of Literature and Music (LNMLM). The conference, which also marked LNMLM’s 100th anniversary and looked both backward and forward, highlighted ERM’s best practices as a source of fresh ideas for setting future directions among colleagues in Latvia and abroad.
This year’s conference carried the subtitle “A vision of the future as the key to museum development” and brought together museum professionals, researchers, and enthusiasts to jointly discuss the directions museums might take in a changing world. Within the framework of LNMLM’s centenary year, the conference also addressed the setting of future goals from a historical perspective, with gratitude expressed to the museum’s founder Jānis Greste (1876–1951) – a teacher, natural scientist, and collector whose vision laid the foundation not only for LNMLM but also for many other Latvian museums. Greste emphasized the importance of using collections as tools for education and science, and established a tradition of gathering contemporary cultural values, involving the public, and thinking ahead.
